Analysis and Critical Study of “Neo-Golestan”: A Contemporary Parody of Saadi’s Golestan
Akram Heratian (Author in Charge), Zahra Dehghani
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A parody is a form of humorous imitation that mocks a literary masterpiece. The poet and author of a parody imitates the style, form, and stylistic features of a particular poet or author but replaces the serious and weighty content of the original work (model) with subjects that are trivial or contrary in nature. The result is a comic reinterpretation of the original work that ridicules the source text. Neo-Golestan by Pedram Ebrahimi stands as the most recent parody of Saadi’s Golestan, first published in the early 2010s. This research aims to discuss the concept and process of parody-making and to analyze Neo-Golestan in terms of its stylistic and thematic elements. The study further seeks to reveal the nature of this parody, its structure, and the extent of the author’s success in creating this work and parody-making.
METHODOLOGY: The present study follows a descriptive-analytical method, and its data are collected using desk and documentary sources. Both Golestan and Neo-Golestan were thoroughly examined, after which the necessary data were collected, organized, and analyzed through relevant references.
FINDINGS: Neo-Golestan differs from earlier parodies of Golestan. The author selected several of Saadi’s anecdotes and reshaped them into humorous, satirical stories consistent with modern social concerns. Simultaneously, the sentences from the original work are woven into these anecdotes. This creativity distinguishes Neo-Golestan from other parodies of Saadi’s Golestan.
CONCLUSION: Neo-Golestan has all the necessary traits of an effective parody. The author demonstrates inventive recall of the original model. Furthermore, it offers appealing content that attracts the reader’s attention. Neo-Golestan is free of vulgar or obscene expressions and anecdotes, making it a successful comic work.
