Analysis and Investigation of Grice’s Linguistic Patterns in Children’s and Young Adult Literature (A Case Study of Selected Works by Houshang Moradi Kermani)

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Grice’s Cooperative Principle addresses speech acts based on four maxims: Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner. The primary objective of this study is to analyze and examine Grice’s communicative theory within a selection of Houshang Moradi Kermani’s literary works. In Moradi Kermani"s fiction, these maxims play a significant role, particularly in character dialogues, where they are sometimes intentionally flouted to achieve specific narrative effects such as realism, social criticism, or humor.
METHODOLOGY: The research employs a descriptive-analytical method based on library studies and the application of Grice’s Cooperative Principle. The statistical population consists of six selected works by Houshang Moradi Kermani.
FINDINGS: The findings indicate that in the analyzed stories, the Maxim of Quantity is generally observed to a significant degree, as dialogues in the form of questions and answers are kept to the extent required by the narrative. The Maxim of Quality is often flouted through childlike exaggerations or concealments resulting from poverty or lower social strata. The Maxim of Relation is frequently flouted, particularly in The Ghesse-haye Majid. Similarly, the Maxim of Manner is flouted in several of his works, including The Bache-haye Ghalibaf-khaneh.
CONCLUSION: The results demonstrate that the Maxim of Quantity is the most strictly adhered to in Moradi Kermani’s works. Other principles, such as Quality, Relation, and Manner, are frequently flouted, serving not only artistic and narrative functions but also reflecting deeper themes of poverty, humor, and social/class pressures.
