Stylistic Reflections and Comparative Analysis of Khaqani’s Qasida of Iwan Mada'in and the Mu'allaqat Al-Saba'
Ali Bazvand (Author in Charge)
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Afzal al-Din Badil ibn Ali Najjar Shirvani, pen-named Khaqani, is among the most prominent panegyrists and ode-writers in Persian literature who forged an independent, intricate, and influential poetic style through novel themes, creative compounds, and artistic expressions. Among his works, the Qasida of Iwan Mada"in stands as one of the most magnificent odes in the traditions of dimna-writing and didactic reflection, sharing significant intertextual and structural ties with the Mu"allaqat Al-Saba" of pre-Islamic Arabic poetry. This study aims to elucidate Khaqani’s stylistic engagement with ancient Arabic poetic paradigms, analyze formal similarities, and examine his artistic deviations from the traditional talal-writing (ruin-sentimentality) convention.
METHODOLOGY: This study adopts a library-based methodology with a descriptive-analytical approach grounded in comparative literature. Through textual and stylistic analysis, the structural, rhetorical, and thematic similarities and discrepancies between Khaqani’s Qasida of Iwan Mada"in and the seven pre-Islamic odes (Mu"allaqat Al-Saba") were extracted and categorized.
FINDINGS: The results reveal substantial convergences between the two works regarding the vertical axis of imagery, descriptive patterns, external meter, and the tradition of lamenting over ruins (wuquf "ala al-atlal). However, Khaqani executed a stylistic innovation and departed from traditional conventions by shifting the narrative perspective from amorous lamentation and nostalgia for the beloved"s abode to a cosmic worldview, philosophy of history, and didactic reflection.
CONCLUSION: Khaqani intelligently borrowed formal and structural elements from the Arabic poetic canon while infusing them with philosophical-historical thought, expanding elegiac rhetoric, and employing distinct linguistic techniques. Consequently, he crafted an ode grounded in sublime humanistic and national motifs, establishing a novel stylistic paradigm for describing ruins within comparative Persian and Arabic literature.
